Blackened Chicken is an easy low carb meal for the whole family to enjoy. It is made with chicken breasts and coated in various spices, then seared in a hot cast iron pan. This is the perfect family dinner that is ready in about 15 minutes!

I love making this recipe quite often because it is healthy, affordable, and low in carbs. Also, blackened chicken has become one of my go-to meals when it comes to utilizing chicken breasts. The seasoning makes this dish stand out, as it is very tasty and delicious.

Another benefit of it is that you can make it ahead and store for days to come. That way, you simply reheat it quickly and have dinner ready!

What is blackened chicken?

It is simply a technique to prepare and cook the chicken in various spices and seasonings, then seared it in butter or oil, under high heat. This style of seasoning and cooking can be applied to various meats and seafood as well.

What do you need to make blackened chicken?

You will need the following ingredients:

  • 3-4 boneless and skinless medium-sized chicken breasts
  • 1 tablespoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ½ teaspoon Italian Seasoning herbs
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons avocado/olive oil (divided)

How to make blackened chicken?

Once you have the ingredients ready, the rest is pretty simple.

For a faster cooking time, pound the chicken out flat or filet them.

Mix all the spices in a bowl, dry the chicken breasts and coat them in oil. Dip the breasts into the spices and cook on a hot cast iron pan.

In place of the oil, use melted butter for a rich flavour.

What to serve with blackened chicken? 

This dish can be served with pretty much anything, starting with a turnip gratin, cucumber salad. Also, if you are looking for a low-carb side dish, then enjoy it with spicy zucchini cauliflower rice, or brussels sprouts.

What to do with leftovers?

If you end up with leftovers, you can simply refrigerate for days to come. Simply, use a sealed container and store it in the fridge for up to 4 days.

You can reheat leftovers in the oven at 350 degrees F for about 5-7 minutes. Similarly, feel free to microwave the breasts for about 1-2 minutes, until warm.

Recipe Tips

You can use a various mix of spices in this recipe. Also, if you want to make it spicier, add some crushed red pepper flakes.

In addition, you can utilize this seasoning for other types of meats. For example, you can make blackened pork chops, beef, or even salmon.

For a healthier version, you can bake the meat at 350 degrees F for about 25 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 4 medium chicken breasts boneless
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning

Instructions

  • In a bowl, whisk together all the seasoning ingredients.
  • Dry the chicken breasts with a paper towel, and coat them with the oil or use a non-stick spray. Then, coat evenly the breasts on both sizes with the spices.
  • Heat up a cast-iron skillet for a few minutes, so it is really hot. Place the chicken on the hot cast iron pan and let it cook for 5-6 minutes on each size.
  • Remove the chicken to a plate and let it rest for a few minutes prior to serving.
